The Rosh HaShanah Seder – Seder Yehi Ratzon

A Sephardic Experience, In English e’ in italiano

The Rosh HaShanah seder has its origins in the Talmud (Horayot 12a) where Rabbi Abaye writes about eating those foods that grow in abundance at this time of the year.

Beginning with prayers of gratitude, we serve symbols of this abundance at our seder table as we are grateful for the prosperity of the year that has concluded. In addition, the seder also provides the opportunity to taste a variety of foods that symbolize our hopes and dreams for the coming year.

The seder itself is called, “Seder Yehi Ratzon,”(The Seder of God’s will) and begins with prayers that we will be blessed with bounty, strength and peace.

In Sephardic Jewish homes there are several ways to prepare and conduct the Rosh HaShanah seder. These traditional foods and blessings represent a combination of my family’s Sephardic traditions from Italy, Gibraltar and Morocco.  The seder is usually held on Erev Rosh HaShanah, the night before the first synagogue service.  Our seder offers the Mediterranean experience … a taste of Seder Yehi Ratzon.

Personal Thoughts and Discussion

The New Year is filled with promise. Take a moment to consider: What one word signifies Rosh HaShanah for you?

Personal Thoughts/Discussion

Rabbi/Seder Leader:  (Ask the group) Is it possible to end all fighting?  How do we end fighting among colleagues, families, siblings, friends?

Rabbi/Seder Leader: “Consider your own efforts at peacemaking as we join in with our song of peace:

Sing together: Oseh Shalom

Pomegranate or Fig/ melograno o fichi

NOTE: It’s best if you prepare a pomegranate by peeling it and placing all the seeds in a bowl. If pomegranates are unavailable a fig is a fine substitute. The requirement is that you have a fruit that is filled with seeds. It is said that the pomegranate was chosen for the Rosh HaShanah seder because it often contains exactly 613 seeds, which represents the number of the mitzvot.

Rabbi/Seder Leader: (directs everyone to take a piece of pomegranate or a fig in hand,)

Rabbi/Seder Leader: Baruch atah Adonai, elohenu melech ah-olam, borei p’re ha-etz.

Blessed are you, Adonai, Ruler of the universe who has created the fruit of the tree.”

Rabbi/Seder Leader:  May it be your will, God, that in this New Year we keep your commandments.

The Group: Ken Yehi Ratzon” ( Taste the fruit)

Personal Thoughts and Discussion

Rabbi/Seder Leader:  What commandment/ t is most meaning to you and why? (Take comments from the group.) We find the commandments in the Torah, so what could be more appropriate than a Torah song?

(Moses commanded us a Torah)

Rabbi/seder leader: (Take a piece and hold it high.)

Fennel symbolizes strength. May it be your will, God, that we will have the strength to increase our all that is good in our character. ”

Rabbi/Seder Leader : May it be Your will, God, to eradicate fear from our hearts and trust in you to replace fear with faith.

Baruch Baruch atah Adonai, eloheinu melech ha-olam, borei p’ri besamin.

The Group: Ken Yehi Ratzon. (Taste the celery)

Personal Thoughts and Discussion

Rabbi/Seder Leader: In ancient times celery symbolized that good things in life will come to us if we overcome our fear of the unknown and the untried. Prophet Elijah understood this. Elijah proclaimed God’s messages at a time when the northern kingdom of Israel had turned away from God and toward idolatry. Elijah repeatedly risked his life to obey the Lord’s directives. At the same time, Elijah sometimes gave into fear, doubt, and discouragement. His victories and struggles serve as lessons for us.

Rabbi/Seder Leader:  How can we conquer fear… fear of the unknown, fear of those who are different from us, fear of not getting what we want in life, fear of losing what we have?
